I am the poster boy for doing everything offensive. But everything I did, I make no apologies for, because I was trying to entertain people. I wanted to be interesting and entertaining to that guy driving the car. When your interviews were more hostile, they fit with the image you played up of yourself as a Hollywood outsider.

If you’ve seen any press pics of this guy it’s easy to notice right away that he’s one tall dude because he pretty much always dwarfs any poor soul standing next to him. Well, my friends, that’s because he’s 6’5, and as a 5’9 woman who never wears anything less than a four-inch heel, I fully understand the appeal in that – just not him. The radio host frequently praises Florida on his show for the state’s tax laws and warm weather, and the 3.23-acre estate is rumored to be the place where the Sterns plan to retire. The 8,000-square-foot mega-penthouse is made of five condominiums. He paid $6 million for three condominiums on the 54th floor in 1998 and $15 million for two condominiums on the 53rd floor in 2008.

As he left the courthouse for the week, Donald Trump declared again that his hush money case is politically motivated and challenged President Joe Biden to debate “any time he wants,” even Friday night or at the White House. The Commission on Presidential Debates has already announced the dates of the general election debates between presidential candidates. So far, Biden’s reelection campaign had declined to commit to participating in the debates, a hallmark of every general election presidential campaign since 1976. Donald Trump used to be a regular guest on the show, but he never got the serious interview treatment. Is he capable of the introspection that you want from an interview subject? It’s that someone was willing to do it. That was my approach, and let me tell you, some of that was damaging in my personal life. In my life now, I have a comfortable balance between doing a good radio show and being able to live with myself. How much does being famous help your interviewing?

Where does Howard Stern Live?

In 2020, with all of his homes, he's definitely made it, raking in an estimated $80 million a year, according to The New York Times. With that in mind, let's take a look at the fruits of Stern's labor — aka his many properties. “It's so exciting to finally get to participate in a rescue here,” she told the Palm Beach Daily News at the time. Beth Stern, who is well known for her animal-rights advocacy and pet-adoption work, made inroads into that community in Palm Beach County a couple of years after the Sterns bought their estate. In 2015, she worked with a local rescue effort to help the American Humane Association fly in 60 rescue pets from Alabama with the goal of getting them fostered at homes and no-kill shelters in West Palm Beach, Orlando, Palm Harbor, Naples and Tampa.

When Biden does give interviews, they are often with friendly outlets like MSNBC — or the recording is held back for days. According to Kumar, Biden has given just 89 total interviews during his first three years in office. Still, the timing of the Stern interview was coincidental; a person familiar with the plans said the White House has been working with the Sirius XM host for weeks to arrange the conversation.

But once Donald Trump became a candidate for real — not like the couple of times he toyed with running — he became one of the worst radio guests. So now it would be a much different interview. But I would love to interview Donald and find out what’s going on with the marriage and Melania or how you fire a General Kelly.

In time, automobiles, including the Flavel’s Studebaker sedan, found a home in the Carriage House, and the family’s driver kept a room upstairs. Today the Carriage House functions as the Visitor Center, museum store, and exhibit hall for the Flavel House Museum and the administrative offices of the Clatsop County Historical Society. In 1982, the Clatsop County Historical Society (CCHS) first leased and eventually purchased the building.

Clatsop County Historical Society Tour of Captain George Conrad Flavel Home Announced

Doing so allowed CCHS to move their collection of artifacts out of the Flavel House where they had resided for approximately thirty years. The story of the Flavel family who lived there was finally able to be told in full. The Heritage Museum, then, became the primary source to tell the rich history of Astoria and Clatsop County. As an exhibition space and research center, the Heritage Museum is ever-evolving, offering new and exciting exhibits to the public and acquiring important artifacts for our collections. The Heritage Museum offers visitors the opportunity to explore our region’s rich past.

The general rule is “if it is painted, it is plaster.” The ceiling medallions, cove molding and decorative interior arches are ornamental plaster. They feature contrasting, delicate white detailing, like other Victorian household items. A flower basket decal marks the center of each chair back, a popular Victorian furniture ornament intended to make a plain object more decorative. In the dining room, a six-light chandelier is original to the house. It was a gas light fixture, or gasolier, and has since been electrified and restored.

Eventually, the County transferred full ownership of the property to the Historical Society. By 1887, Flavel had sold his bar piloting operation and largely retired from commercial activities. His descendants continued to live in the house until 1933, when Flavel’s grandniece, Patricia Jean Flavel, donated the mansion to the city of Astoria. Though the city used it for occasional meetings, it was later turned over to Clatsop County, which housed various agencies at the mansion from the late 1930s to early 1940s. The Clatsop County Historical Society assumed ownership in 1951 and operated the mansion as a historical museum. During the 1990s, the Society restored the mansion to its appearance during George and Mary Flavel’s occupancy.

The USO continued to occupy this building through the 1961 closure of the naval base. A walk around the mansion provides views of the wraparound porch, decorative work above the window molding, octagonal tower, patterned shingles, the steeply pitched roof, and the asymmetrical façade. Thank you for your cooperation and for helping our community to slow the spread of COVID-19. The Attic Floor is a large, unfinished area with two small plain bedrooms used by the Flavel’s domestic help. The tower gave the Captain a broad view of Astoria and the Columbia River to keep an eye on the local ship traffic. Still, we do long for some sort of easy-to-hold, easy-to-adore memento of our museum visit, a gorgeous gewgaw or whimsical wearable or fact-packed book, or even a postcard or two.

Twice, it was almost demolished for a parking lot and community park. Operated by the Clatsop County Historical Society since 1950, it is listed on the National Registry of Historical Places. The Flavel House rests on park-like grounds covering an entire city block. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1951. The Queen Anne architectural style, popular from 1880 to 1910, can be seen in the house’s steeply pitched roof, patterned shingles, and cutaway bay windows.

Flavel married Mary Christine Boelling in 1854, and later expanded his business interests, which included the construction of the Occident Hotel (1869). In 1884, Flavel commissioned German-born architect Carl Leick to design a large residence for his family on a full city block at Eighth and Duane streets. Leick relocated from San Francisco for the commission, which he completed in 1888.

The house shares a full city block with a carriage house, which housed buggies, a carriage, sleigh, stables and upstairs, a hayloft. You can see a video showing the history of the Flavel House, browse in the gift shop and memorabilia museum. The Carriage House was built on the southwest corner of the property in 1887. It served as the place where the family kept their carriage, sleigh, and small buggies. It also had three temporary holding stalls for their horses, a tack room, and a hayloft upstairs. In the mid-1890s, the Carriage House was home to the family’s hired caretaker, Alex Murray.

It’s that time of year when the Flavel House Museum opens its dining room for guests to enjoy the very English holiday tradition of having tea and plum pudding. Astoria’s Flavel House Museum, built in the 1880s, is a fine example of Queen Anne architecture, its interior curated to the later Victorian period. While the home’s lavish decor can seem overwhelming, a careful look reveals more than meets the eye. As a volunteer docent, I enjoy sharing some of my favorite interior details of the home, many often overlooked. Constructed in 1904 and 1905 to serve as Astoria’s City Hall, the building that now houses the Heritage Museum has served multiple purposes over the years.

The house was very modern with wall-to-wall carpeting, gaslighting, indoor plumbing, and a central heating system. The Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County no longer requires masks worn at all times indoors and in our outdoor Butterfly Pavilion, regardless of vaccination status. In accordance with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, we still strongly recommend all visitors to continue wearing masks while indoors and ask that individual choices are respected. The annual tea and plum pudding event will commence on Saturday afternoon and continue for four weekends.

The many decorative pilasters, moldings, and brackets were painted in a dark olive color that stood out against the goldenrod-painted shiplap siding. The red hipped roof is punctuated by large projected dormers over slightly projecting bays, introducing an irregularity belying the interior plan. Modern features for the period included full indoor plumbing and a central heating system (augmented by the coal-burning fireplaces in each of the rooms). Each room contained tall, elaborate, Eastlake-style chimney surrounds; those on the main floor were each executed in a different hardwood.

Its colorful glass shades show a bullseye pattern, similar to other light fixture shades in the house. Two coordinating spool chairs sit in the library, from the mid to late 20th century. Spool-turned furniture, which features repetitive rounded turnings, was very popular in the Victorian era. There is a red and white upholstered, reclining divan in Mary Christina Flavel’s bedchamber. It is interesting that the piece was reupholstered, but only the sections that were worn.

The Douglas Fir doors, moldings, and wainscoting were faux wood-grained by a master craftsman to look like exotic hardwoods such as mahogany and burl rosewood. The wood likely came from a mill in Portland or San Francisco and was shipped to Astoria by steamer. Individuals who are aggressive toward staff or other visitors will be expelled from NHM and escorted off the property.

The Society operates the Flavel House Museum, the Heritage Museum, the Oregon Film Museum, and the Uppertown Firefighters Museum. The Basement of the house originally had a dirt floor and contained a large wood-burning furnace. The Second Floor features the main bathroom, five bedchambers, and a small room used as a sewing room or storage room.

Although not open to the public, stairs lead up four floors to the tower with a cupola, used by the family for observing the river traffic on the mighty Columbia River. Step over the threshold into the magnificent main hallway, with walls restored in green hues. The house and its carriage house were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.[1] The house is owned and operated by the Clatsop County Historical Society. To help your visit be as safe as possible, frequently touched areas are cleaned on a regular basis, and hand sanitizer is provided near the entrances and exits of each museum. Protest organizers said they wanted to bring attention to the high numbers of Palestinian and other Arab journalists killed by Israel’s military since the war began in October.

Some called the display of nudity disrespectful while others labeled it "disgraceful." The video then shifts to Montoya dancing with the transgender flag, standing next to others at the event and posing for photos and then, finally, Montoya standing alongside several others, topless, in front of the White House. In a statement to The Post on Tuesday, a White House spokesperson said she flouted basic etiquette and is persona non grata at future events. “THOUSANDS of trans activists (like myself) have worked for decades, to show transgender people in a POSITIVE light to society, and you go and TEAR IT ALL DOWN, in one day?? ” a mental-toughness trainer named Robin St Louis told Montoya with a crying emoji. The president made a grim speech about what he believes is at stake this election, saying that another Trump administration would be even more harmful to America than his first term.

In an evening update, the Texas Department of Public Safety said that 34 arrests had been made by law enforcement on the campus as of 9 p.m. Other buildings on the campus in Arcata are at risk of being occupied, and protesters “have shown a willingness” to lock themselves in facilities and steal equipment, the officials said. House Speaker Mike Johnson called Wednesday for the resignation of the university’s president if she can't "bring order to this chaos." The university closed its campus Wednesday evening as LAPD began arresting demonstrators. The president celebrated Pride Month and the LGBTQ+ community with a reveal of the Pride flag between two American flags.

“When families across the country face excruciating decisions to relocate to a different state to protect their child from dangerous anti-LGTBQ laws, we have to act. We need to push back against the hundreds of callous and cynical bills introduced in states targeting transgender children, terrifying families and criminalising doctors and nurses,” he said. All you’re doing is saying that trans women are women because for some reason, people like to sexualise women’s bodies and say that they’re inappropriate.

“Going topless in DC is legal, and I fully support the movement to free the nipples. Why is my chest now deemed inappropriate or illegal when I show it off? However, before coming out as trans, it was not,” she says in the response video, which has since been deleted. The White House banned a transgender model from its grounds after she flashed her breasts at a Pride event that sparked outrage from conservatives and moderates alike.

While the image has been altered, it is normal for the lights at the White House to be turned off at 11 p.m. A Google reverse image search shows the image was taken by photographer Robin Runck and posted to Alamy Stock Photos on July 9, 2014, when Biden served as vice president under Barack Obama. "10th night in a row no body (SIC) home," reads the text over the dark White House image. The post was shared on Jan. 30 and has over 800 shares and 200 reactions.

She briefly mentioned journalists killed in the war between Israel and Hamas. With hundreds of protesters rallying against the war in Gaza outside the event and concerns over the conflict and humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the perils for journalists covering the conflict, the war hung over this year’s event. But speakers inside made only passing mention of the conflict despite some having to run a gauntlet of demonstrators. Biden’s speech, which lasted around 10 minutes, made no mention of the ongoing war or the growing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Montoya was one of several guests invited to celebrate LGBTQIA+ Pride Month at the White House South Lawn event on June 12. Montoya ended the address by affirming her commitment to using the media kerfuffle as a “catalyst to create positive change” for herself and other trans individuals. Montoya offered special words of apology to black trans individuals, and to her family and friends who were harassed in the wake of the scandal.

One reason it’s hard to guess how much support Kennedy will win this fall is that polls have a hard time measuring how much support he has now. “I will be making a public statement press release soon,” Montoya wrote late Tuesday. “When it comes to Pride, I need to know if a company is doing good in the world and actually showing up for our community,” the activist told The Guardian. Trans White House flasher Rose Montoya has bemoaned the recent loss of big-money brand partnerships — accusing companies of “caving to bullies” during the current backlash to their support of the LGBTQ community.

The most recent Quinnipiac University national poll for example, showed 16% of registered voters saying they would support Kennedy if the election were being held today. Attempts to contact Merager were not immediately successful, though she denied all wrongdoing in an interview with the New York Post, which first reported the charges Thursday morning. Merager told the tabloid she is legally female and claimed that those making complaints to police were engaging in transphobic harassment.

Ms. Montoya’s appearance Saturday is one more skirmish in the transgender culture war. Despite the administration’s support for LGBTQ rights, it likely realized flashing breasts at the White House made for bad precedent. During protests against police brutality last summer, the same photo went viral online alongside the claim that the White House went dark for the first time in history when former President Donald Trump was taken to a bunker. “It is not reflective of the event we hosted to celebrate LGBTQI+ families or the other hundreds of guests who were in attendance,” they added. Many online took screenshots and snippets of Montoya's video and shared them on their own social media accounts in apparent outrage.

With the election now just over six months away, the vast majority of voters, probably about 9 in 10, have made up their minds. But those locked-in voters and states are evenly balanced between the two sides. She shared the clips with her social media followers and later slapped back at critics by claiming she did not violate any Washington, DC, laws. The polyamorous model and trans rights advocate, who grew up in rural Idaho, did not immediately respond to an interview request. “This behavior is inappropriate and disrespectful for any event at the White House,” the flack said.

At one point during the demonstrations, tensions escalated as protesters refused to relocate and remove their tents and other prohibited items, a university official said. The image has been previously misused and debunked by other fact-checking sites. While there was a recent power issue in Washington, the White House was not affected and it is normal for lights at the White House to be turned off at 11 p.m. While some on social media claimed that the lights at White House went out along with the Washington Monument, the White House was not affected by the outage, according to Litterst.

Mr. Polumbo says actions like this and overly sexual displays at Pride parades are hurting the cause for gay rights and mainstream LGBTQ acceptance. “It’s frustrating for me as a gay person, because most of the LGBT community are just normal people, but historically we’ve been hyper sexualized or reduced to our sexuality in a bigoted way,” he says. The montage of moments also shows an interaction with President Biden. The influencer smiles next to the president, saying, "It's an honor, Mr. President. Trans rights are human rights." An image of the White House with the lights off used to claim that President Joe Biden isn't in office has been ALTERED, based on our research.

The White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) dinner on Saturday night provided the ideal platform for Biden to continue a recent run of taking the fight to Trump with more aggressive rhetoric, cutting humour and personal insults. Deeply reported insights into legislation, politics and policy from Sacramento, Washington and beyond. Trump’s campaign isn’t premised on winning a majority, something a Republican has managed only once in the past eight presidential elections, (George W. Bush in 2004). Democrats have also zeroed in on Kennedy’s equivocal statements on abortion, including one in August in which he said he would sign a national ban on abortions after 15 weeks. They skew young, but also tend to be less focused on politics and less likely to vote at all, polls show.

One organizer complained that the White House Correspondents’ Association — which represents the hundreds of journalists who cover the president — largely has been silent since the first weeks of the war about the killings of Palestinian journalists. More than two dozen journalists in Gaza wrote a letter last week calling on their colleagues in Washington to boycott the dinner altogether. Biden’s speech before nearly 3,000 people was being followed by entertainer Colin Jost from “Saturday Night Live.” Academy Award winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Scarlett Johansson, Jon Hamm and Chris Pines were among other stars. Criticism of the Biden administration’s support for Israel’s six-month-old military offensive in Gaza has spread through American college campuses, with students pitching encampments in an effort to force their universities to divest from Israel.

"My trans masculine friends were showing off their top surgery scars and living in joy, and I wanted to join them. And because it is perfectly within the law of Washington, D.C., I decided to join them and cover my nipples just to play it safe. Montoya, who uses she/they pronouns, has not publicly commented on the White House’s decision to ban her from future events, but defended herself on social media from the growing backlash Monday. The White House called the incident “inappropriate and disrespectful” and said it’s “not reflective of the event we hosted to celebrate LGBTQI+ families” or other guests.

Though the woman could not immediately be reached for comment Thursday, she posted a lengthy video on her Instagram account on Aug. 17 addressing “haters” who accused her of faking the video. After the video alleging someone exposed themselves went viral, the spa became the target of right-wing demonstrations, which many chided as transphobic after extremist groups such as the Proud Boys glommed onto the events. The recording, which surfaced in late June, showed an irate customer arguing with employees after she said she had seen a customer with a penis in an area that is reserved for women. The Wilshire Boulevard facility has some gender-separated areas with changing rooms and Jacuzzis.

” another voice is heard off camera later in the video, as Ms. Montoya holds her breasts and shakes them up and down. A transgender man stands fully topless next to her, showing off his “top surgery” scars. The White House condemned Montoya's actions in a public statement, however, saying Montoya and others seen stripping in the video would not be invited back to the premises. The original video, posted to TikTok, shows Montoya and another unnamed transgender activist, a biological female, baring their breasts on the South Lawn with the White House in view behind them. While Montoya is correct that Washington, D.C., laws allow people to be topless, the White House is federal land where local D.C. Trans activist Rose Montoya doubled down Monday on her decision to go topless at President Biden's Pride Month event at the White House.

That has included a public endorsement of Biden earlier this month by 15 members of the Kennedy family. It’s impossible to know how many of Stein’s voters might have voted for Hillary Clinton, but the claim that she cost Clinton the election is at least plausible. The wide variation underscores the problem pollsters face in measuring Kennedy voters. His backers come from both the left and the right and disagree widely on many issues. Disaffected people are inherently hard to poll — they tend not to readily respond to surveys — and hard to predict in terms of turnout.

Lee, meanwhile, has avoided commenting on the lawmakers’ expulsions, saying the controversy is a House issue. Political tensions rose when Pearson, Johnson and Jones, from the House floor, joined with hundreds of demonstrators who packed the Capitol to call for passage of gun control measures. The House’s vote to remove Pearson and Jones but keep white state Rep. Gloria Johnson drew accusations of racism. Republican leadership denied that race was a factor, noting that Johnson’s role in the protest didn’t involve some steps that Jones and Pearson took, including speaking into a bullhorn. Just two other House members have ever been ousted from the chamber since the Civil War. Fielding questions from lawmakers, Johnson reminded them that she did not raise her voice nor did she use the bullhorn — as did the other two, both of whom are new lawmakers and among the youngest members in the chamber.

Tennessee House moves to expel 3 Democrats after gun protest

The bill was briefly debated on the House floor last week but support remained unclear. Interest in the reparations bill emerged again this year, just as lawmakers and GOP Gov. Bill Lee were in the process of finalizing the removal and replacement of every board member of the state’s only publicly-funded historically Black public university, Tennessee State University. That sparked more outrage among critics who contend that Tennessee’s white GOP state leaders have long refused to trust Black local leaders.

In a dramatic act of political retribution, Republicans moved to expel the three Democrats from the legislature, and on April 6 two of them, Representatives Justin Jones and Justin J. Pearson, were ousted in votes that passed largely along party lines. The third lawmaker, Representative Gloria Johnson, narrowly avoided expulsion by one vote. In Tennessee, just eight lawmakers have been expelled from the house in the past. Six of those were Confederates who were expelled in the 19th century for refusing to affirm the citizenship of formerly enslaved Black people. In the 20th century, a legislator was expelled after being convicted of bribery, and in 2016, a member was expelled for sexual misconduct.

Before Pearson returned to the chamber, lawmakers cheered and applauded as the police officers who responded to the deadly March 27 mass shooting at a Nashville elementary school shooting — the event that prompted the gun control protest — were honored in the chamber. Democratic state Rep. Bob Freeman praised the officers’ bravery but also stressed to his fellow lawmakers that “inaction is not an option” on how to respond to the tragedy. Hundreds of protesters packed the Capitol last week calling for the Republican-led Statehouse to pass gun control measures in response to the Nashville school shooting that resulted in the deaths of six people.

Although she's now retired, Johnson said that she still spends a lot of time on school campuses and that whenever she hears the cry of police siren or an ambulance, she jumps. Lawmakers began to take up the question of expelling three of their colleagues shortly after 1 p.m. During the proceeding, loud protests could occasionally be heard from off the chamber's floor. Shelby County Commissioner Mickell Lowery also called a special meeting over Pearson's expulsion. The two vacant seats will be filled, and both Jones and Pearson could soon return to the legislature. According to the Tennessee state Constitution, because there are less than 12 months before the next election, the successor is to be elected by the legislative body of the replaced legislator's county of residence.

What to know about the "Tennessee Three": Why were two of the Democratic lawmakers expelled, and what happens now?

Sarah Shoop Neumann's letter criticized gaps in training and burdening teachers with the responsibilities of confronting an assailant with a gun while keeping an entire classroom safe. Republicans denied Democratic assertions that introducing more guns into schools will endanger children. “This is nothing but a bad disaster and tragedy waiting to happen if we do not ensure personal responsibility," House Democratic Caucus Chair John Ray Clemmons, D-Nashville, said. "Our children’s lives are at stake." Armed teachers, who will be required to undergo training that some opponents have argued is not intensive enough, will be allowed to carry handguns in their classrooms and in most campus situations without informing parents and most of their colleagues they're armed. To qualify for election to the House, one must be 21 years old, a U.S. citizen, a state resident for three years, and a resident of the county in which elected for one year immediately preceding the election. She added, "This kind of expulsion, while deeply problematic from a democracy standpoint, provides a good way to score those points."

With two House seats left vacant, the authority to name temporary replacements fell to the local governing bodies in the districts that had been represented by Mr. Jones and Mr. Pearson. A graduate of New York University's Arthur L. Carter School of Journalism, she previously worked at NBC News' TODAY Digital. Tennessee House Republicans said on social media that if Jones and Pearson return to the House, they hope that the duo will "act as the thousands who have come before them — with respect for our institution, their fellow colleagues and the seat they hold." He'd been one of the youngest members of the legislature and represented the state's 52nd district, which has about 70,000 residents and is part of Davidson County, the Nashville metro area.

A few hours later, House Republican Caucus Chairman Jeremy Faison referred to Jones as the “former representative” during the evening session. Johnson, a retired teacher, said her concern about school shootings was personal, recalling a day in 2008 when students came running toward her out of a cafeteria because a student had just been shot and killed. Dozens of protestors in the galleries began chanting "Blood on your hands" as soon as the legislation passed, prompting House Speaker Cameron Sexton, R-Crossville, to order state troopers to clear the galleries.

Johnson, 60, is a retired teacher who spoke of her experience surviving a school shooting before her vote. She represents the state's 90th district, part of Knox County, and is currently serving her fourth term in the legislature. Republicans, who hold a large majority of seats, immediately pledged a rapid response. (Pearson was newly elected and had yet to receive any committee assignments.) Motions to expel the three from the legislature were introduced by three different Tennessee Republicans on April 3, accusing the trio of "disorderly behavior."

They used a bullhorn on the House floor, speaking without being recognized and leading protests calling for gun restrictions as Republicans, who hold a supermajority in the chamber, stood by. Upon Pearson’s return to the House floor, lawmakers debated legislation that deals with the teaching of “divisive concepts” regarding race, gender and sex on college campuses. After a brief spirited debate involving Pearson and Jones, Republicans used procedural rules to immediately halt discussion and force members to vote on the bill.

Jones also noted the rare instances in which the House or Senate have taken such a drastic measure against a sitting, elected representative. The trio, whom supporters call "The Tennessee Three," have already been stripped of their committee assignments. "Unfortunately, we were obligated to levy unprecedented consequences on those members today. Our focus continues to be on the six innocent lives that were brutally taken last week at the Covenant School, not those who have chosen to make this tragedy about themselves." After the votes were concluded, she suggested that she had survived the process because she is White and Jones and Pearson are Black. Justin Jones, 27, was the first of the "Tennessee Three" to be expelled from the House, by a vote of 72-25.

An earlier version of this article incorrectly identified the political party of a group of representatives who notably voted “no” on new aid for Israel. "The United States cannot continue to support the extreme offensive that has caused unimaginable suffering to the Palestinian people." The House floor also fell into chaos after the vote over the bill, which was paused last year in the aftermath of the Covenant shooting and raucous protests over Republican supermajority inaction on gun issues.

"I also think it’s a parent’s job to know if their child is being put at risk by having someone in the classroom with a firearm that another child could find, that could be discharged and actually harm them or other kids. Covenant parents have echoed widespread concern about the secrecy clause in the bill, which bars school administrators from revealing who in the school is armed except to relevant law enforcement and school staff who are responsible for campus security. Williams said the bill seeks to shield gun carriers' identities to protect them from related "hiring and firing decisions."

Who represents me?

"None of us believed that we were doing anything that deserved expulsion from the House," he explained, adding that the House rules dictate that a member who violates the rules of decorum should face "censure" and not "expulsion." Rep. Justin Pearson took a multi-pronged approach to attacking the allegations against him. "Every single time because you just never get that out of your head," she said. Jones was the first of the three to address the chamber, offering an explanation for his actions on the well of the floor on March 30. A motion was adopted to allow Johnson, Pearson and Jones 20 minutes each to speak on their own behalf, including time for their attorneys.

Election legislation tracking

Democrats put up a big vote — 174 — in favor of this bill, which was intended to sweeten the overall package for conservatives. Echoing one of the many grievances shared by hard-right Republicans who opposed all of the aid measures, Mr. Good said his support for “Israel’s right to defend itself remains unshakeable” but that he disagreed with a measure that would add to the nation’s debt. But Saturday's vote was different — this bill is all but certain to be signed into law, and the significant number of Democrats who voted against Israel aid shows how quickly the issue has shifted in recent months. The combined bill closely mirrors a $95.3 billion national security bill passed by the Senate in February. A Florida Republican lawmaker proposed a constitutional amendment this year that would have banned state or local governments from paying reparations, but the measure didn’t pass. A Missouri Republican introduced a bill that would ban any state or local government entity from spending on reparations based on race, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation or economic class.

What to know about the "Tennessee Three": Why were two of the Democratic lawmakers expelled, and what happens now?

"I absolutely never yelled," she said, adding that she "did not speak in voice louder than any other member on this floor." Speaking in response to questions from a Republican lawmaker, Johnson disagreed that she had shouted from the floor. Windle said expulsion has been reserved for people who take bribes, commit sexual offenses, or for felons. Windle argued that contrary to the motion submitted for her removal of the House, Johnson never shouted or pounded the podium or displayed a sign containing a political statement while she was in the well last week — all of which would be in violation of the House rules. Still, Krishnakumar notes that in highly polarized times, elected officials are hunting for ways to score points with their supporters and one-up the opposing party. Democratic state Rep. Critics said that the expulsions were an overreaction that defied the will of the voters who had elected Mr. Jones and Mr. Pearson in Nashville and Memphis, the state’s two largest cities, which also have large Black and Democratic-leaning populations. Democratic lawmakers and activists also warned that the expulsions could have dangerous repercussions, including encouraging lawmakers in Tennessee and other states controlled by a single party to use the measure as a tool for silencing dissenting voices. NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee Republican lawmakers took the first steps Monday to expel three Democratic members from the GOP-dominant House for their role in a recent gun control protest at the state Capitol. “Rather than debating the merits of the issue (of gun control), these Republican lawmakers have chosen to punish, silence, and expel duly-elected representatives of the people of Tennessee,” Biden said in a statement. Tennessee’s GOP-dominated House expelled two Democratic lawmakers over their roles in a gun control protest. Expelled by their Republican colleagues for an act of protest, Justin Jones and Justin J. Pearson were no longer members of the Tennessee House of Representatives on Friday.

While all Democrats voted in favor of aid to Ukraine and all but Ms. Tlaib supported funding to Taiwan, 37 left-leaning Democrats defected to vote against the Israel aid bill. They said before the vote that they opposed unfettered aid to Israel that could be used in its offensive in Gaza. The opposition to the Israel aid represented a minority of Democrats, but reflected the deep resistance to unconditional aid and the divisions in the party on Gaza. Representative Jamie Raskin of Maryland represented a notable new “no” vote among Democrats, and other standouts included Representatives Donald S. Beyer Jr. of Virginia, Earl Blumenauer of Oregon and John Garamendi of California. The plan, laid out in a rule that passed on Friday, was concocted to capitalize on the pools of support for each part of the $95 billion package, while preventing opposition to any one piece from taking down all of them. As the TSU fallout increased, House members appeared hesitant to hold a potentially explosive debate over reparations.

Key legislation

Jones said Todd shoved into him near the well, leading Clemmons to call for a rules violation vote against Todd. Republicans easily voted it down, in addition to another rules violation call against a Rep. Jerome Moon, R-Maryville, for recording on the House floor, an official rule that is loosely followed most days. Long-simmering tensions between members spilled over as Rep. Justin Jones, D-Nashville, walked toward the well of the House chamber while recording on his phone. Rep. Chris Todd, R-Madison County, rushed to the clerk's desk beside Jones to call Jones out of order. A scrum ensued, with lawmakers hurling accusations at each other and filing official out of order calls with the House clerk. "I've heard so many times about parental consent, that it’s a parent’s responsibility to raise their child," said Rep. Justin Pearson, D-Memphis, who called the bill "absolutely insane" on Tuesday.

Still, 37 “no” votes, while a break from Washington’s ironclad support for the Jewish state, fell short of the opposition bloc progressives had hoped to muster. Thirty-nine Democrats had voted “no” on Friday on the rule to allow the foreign aid package to come to the House floor, a target that progressives just missed on Saturday on the Israel bill. Fourteen of those Democrats voted on Saturday in favor of aid to Israel, while 12 Democrats who voted to allow the package on the floor on Friday then cast votes against the funding itself. The House passed a long-stalled foreign aid package on Saturday that gives funding to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, with a majority of lawmakers backing money for American allies across the globe. Meanwhile, Republicans voted through three separate rules violations against Jones, including for recording on the House floor. Jones later said it was an inequitable application of the rules wielded by the GOP supermajority against a young Black lawmaker.

The larger house, and arguably the more representative one, of Tennessee's bicameral legislature is called the House of Representatives. It occupies the largest space in the State Capitol known as the House Chamber seen at left. The state is divided into 99 House districts from each of which one representative is elected. Reps. Justin Jones, D-Nashville, and Justin Pearson, D-Memphis, were ousted not for committing crimes but for breaching the rules of decorum.

Sexton later cleared the galleries, with troopers flooding into the Capitol rotunda to block access from much of the hallway. The House also functions in a similar capacity to that of the Senate in several ways. For instance, after the general election, the House is the sole judge of the qualifications of its members and may determine its own rules of proceedings. Furthermore, the House, like the Senate, is free to adopt resolutions regarding virtually any issue concerning the state, country or world community. Other leaders in the House of Representatives include the majority and minority leaders who are the chief floor spokespersons for their respective political parties. In addition, the Democratic and Republican Caucus chairpersons occupy significant roles in directing meetings of their party members.
